2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Boost Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Follows Poor Response
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement follows a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our fans.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David
