"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close gang. Their videos often show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
