Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the night before, City overwhelmed the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This outcome represented successive Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since last May, placing them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to balance league and European soccer with a small roster has been a frequently analyzed subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed fatigued all game, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all added energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such fitness concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to gather for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose energetic offense played with and dismantled the opposition with a superb opening period performance that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and left United struggling. Prior to this match, the away side had let in just six in this WSL season but they collapsed in the face of the hosts' creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came soon when Miedema used her power to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, using the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her passes were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forward, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not test Yamashita. City, in the meantime, controlled possession, taunting their opponents and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

They added to their cushion with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the midfield from the back, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Casparij received possession on the wing before sending a precise low cross for Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a swift shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any team who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to place them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
