The English and Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
