The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
