TikTok Provides Users Power to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform announced that it now features more than 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a global release. This development coincides with a rise in AI content, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this output is deemed “AI slop”, a term for substandard, factory-style content that is typically absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are currently over a billion videos on its app labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a limited percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they see by using the topic control feature in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter cover politics, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

Its policies oblige content makers to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will from now on add an artificially created tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This action is intended to deter users from seeking to bypass the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is furthermore launching a $2 million educational fund for professionals and groups to produce educational content about ethical AI use. This project will benefit educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its safety measures, during debate over plans to lay off numerous review team members in the UK. It is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by staff. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
