Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
